A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS

I came about writing my book when I was caring for my mother who was housebound and terminally. It was then that I began to reflect on the difficult life that my mother and father had encountered as immigrants from Jamaica, invited to the UK in the 1950s by the British Government,in order to help in rebuilding the UK after the Second World War.

It was then, that I began to reflect on what life could have been like for West Indian immigrants in trying to navigate a strange land with a young family who were born in the UK.

In a lot of West Indian families the father was very strict with their children, especially their daughters, and so the main character of my story-line ‘Susie’ was created with her very strong defiance and battle of wills between Susie and her overbearing dominating father was born.
